You have just been told that you will need to have surgery for bowel or bladder problems. As part of the operation you may need to have a stoma. A stoma is an artificial opening to the abdominal surface through which either urine or faeces exit. This may be called a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy.

Although your initial reaction may be fear or anxiety, there are healthcare professionals that will give you advice and reassurance.

This website is here for you to supplement information you have been given and will enable you to access it in your own time and pace. There are organisations that will be happy to discuss aspects of living with a stoma with you and give non-medical advice and help.
