Bleeding From The Stoma
Bleeding can be due to over enthusiastic cleaning of the stoma and if this is the case, there is no cause for alarm.
Apply light pressure to the bleeding point, this will help it stop. It is important to treat the stoma gently. Certain drugs such as anti-coagulants, (anti-blood clotting drugs) such as Aspirin and Warfarin, can increase the chance of bleeding.
Damage from a badly fitted pouch may also contribute to a stoma bleeding, e.g. when the hole is cut too small.
If the bleeding is excessive or continual the advice of a stoma care nurse should be sought as medical attention may be necessary.
