Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s disease is a chronic disease, which affects about 1,000 new people each year in the UK. In spite of much research the cause of the disease remains unclear. Some families have a higher chance of developing the disease because of their genetic make up. It has also been linked to smoking, viral or bacterial infections.
Crohn’s disease is an illness, which can affect any part of the digestive system, although the small and large bowel is the most common site. It is not infectious and is not a form of cancer but it may become problematic over a number of years. There may be long periods of good health alternating with ‘flare-ups’, when the disease is more active.
At present there is no cure for the illness, but drugs and sometimes surgery can bring relief from symptoms.
