Post-operative care
Following surgery you will have an intravenous drip and there may be other drains and tubes, which will be removed over the next few days as you progress. Pain control will have been discussed with you prior to your surgery.
Your doctor’s team will decide when you can start to take fluid, progressing on to a light diet. Click here for more information on nutrition.
If you have a stoma it may be swollen but this will settle down over the next weeks. The pouches used at this stage are transparent and drainable and enable the healthcare team to observe the colour of the stoma and the output in the first few days.
A hospital stay of 8–12 days is average following surgery. During this time you will be taught how to manage your stoma. The nurse specialist will advise you of the different types of pouches available. Click here for more information on stoma products.
